Hey everybody, it's the weekend and time for the All Memphis Music Specialty Show.

It's been said that Memphis is included in more song titles than any other city in the world. So, it seems natural to us that the gang here at All Memphis Music should do a Specialty Show with songs that have Memphis in the title.

" In the Mood for Memphis " on Inside Sounds, a Memphis label. We'll play this CD and throw in some rare Memphis gems of our own, of course!

( CST, Central Standard Time, Memphis Time) and is rebroadcast on Saturday morning December 20th, at 10:00 AM ( CST, Central Standard Time, Memphis Time).

Lynyrd Skynyrd ~ Live in Memphis ~ Ardent Studios ~ All Memphis Music ~ FM 100 ~ Memphis ~ Radio

The live recording you will hear of Lynyrd Skynyrd this week on the All Memphis Music Specialty Show (Friday November 14th & Saturday November 15th) will come from a live broadcast on FM 100 from 1973 at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. THIS IS THE FIRST KNOWN LIVE RECORDING OF THE BAND!!

I must admit that I was a part of putting this broadcast together with National MCA Records Promotion Manager, Dick Williams. I am especially proud that I was in Atlanta "working for MCA " when Lynyrd Skynyrd hit it big. I first saw the band at a showcase for MCA employees, writers, and radio people. It was a private event. No public. Three bands played that afternoon and night and when the final band started, everybody in the club stopped in their tracks. Three guitar players, 2 drummers, background singers, keyboards, and Ronnie Van Zant. It was Lynyrd Skynyrd. Who? LYNYRD SKYNYRD. All of a sudden you knew why this band would become an American icon.

The band BLEW everyone there away. I remember very well that when "Freebird" broke into it's crescendo, there were people standing on tables. "Freebird" ended some seven minutes later, the band left the stage and EVERYBODY in that 500 seat club were comatose. A victim of one of rock's greatest bands, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Throughout our broadcast I will give you some insights about the band, the live performance , touring with the band and what it was like to present Lynyrd Skynyrd with a Gold Record.

Hope you like the show..Jon Scott (formerly FM 100 1967-1974)

The All Memphis Music Specialty Show airs Friday night November 14th at 10:00 PM (CST MEMPHIS TIME) and is re-broadcast for the rest of our global listeners on Saturday morning at 10:00 AM (CST MEMPHIS TIME)

All Memphis Music ~ FreeWorld ~ Internet Radio ~ Memphis Sound ~ Friday October 17 & Saturday October 18

It's the ALL MEMPHIS MUSIC Specialty Show this weekend. We'll be playing the new CD from Memphis based, FreeWorld, in it's entirety. The show will air this Friday night, October 17 th at 10:00 PM (CST MEMPHIS TIME) & rebroadcast on Saturday Morning, October 18th at 10:00 AM (CST MEMPHIS TIME)

FreeWorld has been an independent, regionally touring, ever-evolving Memphis-based musical ensemble since 1987. Drawing from influences as broad-based as Booker T. & the MG's, John Coltrane, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, and The Meters, these brothers under one multicultural groove have remained a consistently entertaining and informed voice on the Memphis music scene since the group's inception.

Featuring 78-year-old jazz saxophone legend Herman Green (who has performed &/or recorded with the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, B.B. King, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Phineas & Calvin Newborn, Bob Weir, Rob Wasserman, Stephen Perkins and a host of others during his 63 year professional music career), the group is literally 'new school meets old school', and has been variously described as "The best of Memphis, New Orleans, & San Francisco - all rolled into one fresh & excitingly unique musical experience!"

They've also had the privilege of sharing the stage with a wide variety of music legends over the years, such as Levon Helm, The Memphis Horns, Billy Preston, Richie Havens, Blues Traveler, Derek Trucks, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos, Merl Saunders, Dr. John, Timothy Leary, John Sinclair, The Bar-Kays, Ann Peebles, Steve Cropper, James Cotton, Mojo Buford, Jimmie Vaughan & Double Trouble, Susan Tedeschi, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, and Widespread Panic just to name a few.
"From the Bluff", their 5th full length CD, was produced by none other than Memphis music icon Jim Dickinson - who has produced, performed and/or recorded with some of the most influential and successful recording artists of all time, including Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Sam & Dave, Arlo Guthrie, The Replacements, Big Star, and Ry Cooder among MANY others.

Recorded & mixed at Dickinson's Zebra Ranch Studio in Coldwater, Mississippi, "From the Bluff" prominently features musical contributions from many special guest artists such as Luther Dickinson (lead guitarist for both The Black Crowes & North Mississippi Allstars), Cody Dickinson (drummer for North Mississippi Allstars), The songs on "From the Bluff" are exceptionally well-written (primarily composed by various combinations of the core songwriting team of bassist/vocalist/lyricist Richard Cushing, drummer/lyricist David Skypeck, guitarist Brian Overstreet, and trumpeter/vocalist/lyricist E.J. Dyce), with the lyrical content ranging from light-hearted, observational "slices of life" to deeper philosophical musings, while the music remains true to the oft-touted FreeWorld standards of superb musicianship, tight arrangements and a wide-ranging stylistic and instrumental prowess.

"From the Bluff" is undoubtedly FreeWorld's best and finest recording to date, and again proves the age-old adage: Great music, played from the heart, never goes out of style!
In addition, "From the Bluff" also proudly features original paintings on both the front & back covers (and on the CD itself) by prominent Memphis-based artists David Lynch & Lamar Sorrento.

All Memphis Music ~ Dan Penn ~ Internet Radio ~ www.AllMemphisMusic.com

This week on the All Memphis Music Specialty show we feature the latest CD release from the legendary singer, songwriter and producer, Dan Penn. The show airs this Friday night October 10th at 10:00 PM (CST MEMPHIS TIME) and repeats on Saturday morning October 11th at 10:00 AM (CST MEMPHIS TIME) . The CD, "Junkyard Junky" will be played in it's entirety.

Dan Penn helped shape the development of southern soul music with his legendary songwriting, musicianship and production. A native of Vernon, Alabama, Penn moved to the Florence/Muscle Shoals area while still a teenager and assumed the role of lead vocalist in a local group calling itself the Mark V Combo. It was around this time that he penned his first chart record, Conway Twitty's "Is a Bluebird Blue". Penn's early co-writing collaborations with Spooner Oldham while at Fame included "I'm Your Puppet," which became a hit in 1965 for James & Bobby Purify, and "Out of Left Field," and "It Tears Me Up" performed so memorably by Percy Sledge.

He also co-wrote hits for Joe Simon, Jimmy Hughes and Wilson Pickett."Knowing that the black singers wanted my songs inspired me."

A number of their classics were written for particular singers. "'Sweet Inspiration' was written for the group the Sweet Inspirations,"Cry Like a Baby" was written for Alex Chilton, (Box Tops lead singer). Out of Left Field' was written for Percy Sledge," says Penn.

In 1966, Penn relocated to Memphis and began producing at Chips Moman's American Recording Studio. While at American, Penn and Moman co-wrote "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man," which Franklin turned into a soul classic, along with "Dark End of the Street," stunningly recorded by James Carr, while Dan and Spooner came up with "Cry Like a Baby" for the Box Tops and later "A Woman Left Lonely," written at Dan's Beautiful Sounds Studio in Memphis, and chosen by Janis Joplin for her classic album Pearl.
Penn and wife Linda relocated to Nashville in the '70s

On Labor Day weekend, it won’t be business as usual as the Center for Southern Folklore transforms a small section of South Main Street into the setting for its annual Memphis Music & Heritage Festival, a special celebration of the music, arts and culture of Memphis and the Mississippi Delta region. For much of its 21-year history, the Festival was considered one of the best kept secrets in Memphis, but not anymore. Last year’s Festival reached a whole new level as a crowd estimated at over 30,000 enjoyed two days and five stages of the best music, art, crafts, cooks, heritage talkers and storytellers this region has to offer - and this year should be even better!

The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; August 30 and 31, on Main Street between Peabody Place and Gayoso. There are three outside stages and two stages inside the Center for Southern Folklore. Admission to the public is FREE!

To learn more about the 2008 Memphis Music & Heritage Festival, check out the websites:
http://www.memphismusicandheritagefestival.com/
http://www.southernfolklore.com/

A short preview of this year’s Festival is on YouTube at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Zw9za4QZSY&feature=related

THE MUSIC
Of course, the heart and soul of this festival is the music and this year’s roster definitely delivers the goods. From dynamic soul man Bobby Rush to the wild man of rock, Jason D. Williams and a rare joint performance by Jim Dickinson, Sid Selvidge & Jimmy Crosthwait, the Memphis Music and Heritage Festival presents over 300 musical performers who made Memphis the great melting pot of America's musical heritage and keep it cooking today.

The entire festival roster reads like a who’s who of both the traditional and contemporary Memphis music scene including: The Billy Gibson Blues Band, rockabilly legend Sonny Burgess & The Pacers, neo-soul from Tonya Dyson & Green Onions, hip hop artist Al Kapone, rockabilly /bluesman Billy Lee Riley, the modern gospel sounds of Darrel Petties & SIP, country legend Eddie Bond, jazz-blues diva Joyce Cobb, authentic Delta blues from Blind Mississippi Morris and Brad Webb, singer/songwriter Harlan T. Bobo, traditional gospel from the Brown Singers and Spirit of Memphis, jazz and swing with Johnny Yancey’s Big Band, piano boogaloo with Eden Brent, jazz-funk-and-fusion artists FreeWorld featuring Herman Green, urban blues from The Daddy Mack Blues Band, singer/songwriter Pierce Pettis, bluesman Kenny Brown, alt-rockers Alicja Trout & The River City Tanlines, youthful phenoms Homemade Jamz Blues Band, country traditionalist Roy Harper, jug band music from The Jake Leg Stompers, jazz/soul/blues from The City Champs, the Millennium Maddness Drill Team, blues and boogie with Don McMinn & Nightrain and the list goes on and on.

ARTISTS, craftspeople, COOKS, DANCERS AND TALKERS
While the roster of over 300 bluegrass, soul, jazz, gospel, rock, folk, blues, country, reggae, rockabilly, funk, Klezmer, rhythm & blues, and Latin musicians will be a major focus for the festival, it’s not the only one. An important feature of each festival is the artists, cooks, dancers and talkers whose crafts and food and stories reflect Memphis and the Mid-South, past and present.

“There’s something for everyone at this year’s Festival,” says Executive Producer Judy Peiser. “If you love traditional folk art, you’ll meet artists and craftspeople. If you’re into dance, you’ll enjoy Choctaw dancers, Chinese dancers, square dancers, African drumming and high energy drill teams/drum lines. Our expanded children’s area will present a delightful collection of puppeteers, storytellers and musicians performing for younger festival-goers.”

“If you want to learn about Southern culinary traditions, cooks will share their secrets. In fact, the cooking demonstrations are some of the most popular shows year after year," said Peiser. "It's an opportunity for people to learn about their past from cooks who demonstrate foodways lost with micro-waved pre-packaged, heat-and-serve

HONORING PERFORMER LAURA DUKES
Every year the Festival honors a performer who has made a special contribution to the Memphis music scene. This year’s Festival is dedicated to Laura Dukes or “Little Bit” whose picture graces our posters and t-shirts. Though standing only four feet seven inches and weighing a mere eighty-five pounds, the diminutive Dukes inspired several generations of women performers with a career that began during the heyday of W.C. Handy and lasted most of the 20th century.

Initially a singer and dancer, in the 1930s Laura Dukes began performing with Robert McCollum better known later as Robert Nighthawk. It was from him she learned to accompany herself first on the guitar and later on the ukulele. This led to several years performing with the legendary Memphis Jug Band with Will Shade and Will Batts. In the 1950s, as life on the road lost its luster, Laura worked with Dixieland bands in the Memphis area, playing mostly private parties and festivals. She returned to playing in clubs in the 1970s as a regular performer at Memphis’ “Blues Alley,” fondly remembered as one of the best authentic blues clubs in the country. Dukes performed at Center festivals and events throughout the 1980s and was prominently featured in the Center for Southern Folklore documentary film, All Day & All Night: Memories from Beale Street Musicians.

VOLUNTEERS
One of the most amazing facts about an enormous undertaking like this Festival is that it’s produced by the Center for Southern Folklore with a full and part-time staff of only a half dozen people. The secret is VOLUNTEERS. Every year, dozens of Memphians and Mid-Southerners contribute their time and their energy to a variety of jobs – setting up vendor booths, serving dinners, keeping the trolley tracks clear, decorating Main Street with festive lighting and so on. This volunteer spirit makes it a truly Memphis festival and represents all the good things about our region that we celebrate every day at the Center.

If you or your organization would like to be part of the special team of volunteers that produces the Memphis Music & Heritage Festival, please take a moment and fill out the volunteer form posted at http://www.memphismusicandheritagefestival.com/2008mmhf.html and send it in. The Festival staff asks that prospective volunteers attend the remaining volunteer orientation meeting on August 18 at 6:00 p.m. in the Folklore Store at 123 S. Main. Who is this "Guy" Sebastian ? ~ www.AllMemphisMusic.com

A lot of people have sent us e-mails about a new CD we're playing, called "The Memphis Album", by Australian singer Guy Sebastian. Ever since the crew here at http://www.allmemphismusic.com/ first heard the CD, we have felt that Guy is something special, and obviously so have a lot of you. Guy was the first Australian Idol winner and his dream after he won, was to go to Memphis, Tennesse and record an album with the legendary Steve Cropper. Too big a dream? Steve Cropper said, "Well let me hear his voice", and when he did Steve said "every hair on my body stood up, just like hearing Otis Redding did for the first time." Well the album came out and Steve and Duck Dunn from the MG's were so impressed, that they went to Australia to be Guy's backup band on a recent tour. The reviews were spectacular and all the concerts were sold -out!

Recently All Memphis Music.com played Guys's Cd in it's entirety and due to global requests, we are repeating the special this Friday night April 25th(at 10:00 pm (Memphis Time) and Saturday morning April 26th at 10:00 am (Memphis Time)

This repeat special includes special guests from artists who played on the CD, as well as Ardent Recording Studio President John Fry and guitar hero, Steve Cropper and many others

We do hope you can listen in, as the music is fantastic and the interviews are classic! We can't wait for the USA release of "The Memphis Album"!

All Memphis Music~Larry Raspberry & the Highsteppers Special Show

www.AllMemphisMusic.com is proud to announce this Friday & Saturday's Specialty show from legendary Memphians, Larry Raspberry & the HighSteppers. The show is a live concert, recorded the last night that the famous night club, Solomon Alfreds, was in business, July 4th 1985. The next day, the building was demolished to make way for a new hotel in Overton Square and the concert marked an end to a club that allowed many Memphis Musicians and national artists a place to play.
The show will air this Friday night (28th) at 10 PM Memphis Time and again Saturday morning (29th) at 10 AM Memphis time, complete with commentary from Larry himself.. The album is entitled "We Have Not Yet Begun To Sweat" and it really captures the band in a wild, raucous mood. Needless to say, the crowd was wild too, as free booze and food flowed freely. It was indeed a hot Memphis night, as Solomon Alfred's went down in style. Hope you like it!!

Memphis Tigers # 1 in the Nation All Memphis Music

So it's Saturday night, Jan. 19, we were at the game and we all knew North Carolina had lost their basketball game to Maryland and all we had to do was beat Southern Miss and we'd be # 1.

The Fed-ex Forum was electric. The crowd was loud and the energy was high 45 minutes before tip-off

The TIGERS took off from get go and never looked back......winning by 36...........83-47.

We had to wait til Monday when the polls came out to be sure, and where we would be in the polls.

On the radio, in the stores, all over town, it was TIGER talk.

Finally the polls were released...

The University of Memphis men's Basketball team.....was indeed, # 1 in both the USA

Today/ ESPN poll.......and the Associated Press Coaches Poll

For now.......the most respected team in college basketball.

The City is going....NUTS

What a great time to be a TIGER fan

HOW BOUT THEM TIGERS!!!!!

Honoring the life of Dr Martin Luther King

The new Mavis Staples CD also has a track called "Down In Mississippi" which talks about what is was like growing up in the deep South, having to walk away from one water fountain, cause it was white only. That was a scene I will never forget as one time I accidentally drank from "their" fountain, and my daddy pulling me away and I didn't know what I had done wrong. Man, those were messed up times.
We are honoring Dr Martin Luther King's life today here in the U.S. I was a DJ in Memphis when the shots rang out in the Memphis skies(thank you Bono). I was on the air and every phone in our control room went crazy with news organizations from all over the world trying to get anyone to talk. Nobody in Memphis was allowed on the streets that night, unless deemed an emergency. I will never forget driving home that night after my airshift, and seeing the streets completely empty. An eerie feeling.
Listen closely to the new Mavis Staples CD..it's fantastic.

Listen for excerpts from DR Martin Luther King speeches today on
