This weekend, AllMemphisMusic.com will feature a tribute to Willie Mitchell. On January 5th, the Memphis Music Community, the world music community, and music lovers everywhere lost a true icon with the passing of Willie Mitchell.
Willie was the consumate music man and consumate music business man. Willie was not only a great musician, he was also a writer, arranger, producer, engineer, studio head, and label head.
Best known for signing Al Green to Hi Records, Willie was also responsible for great music from Ann Peeples, OV Wright, Donald Bryant, Syl Johnson, Hi Rhythm, and his own hit instrumentals such as "20-75", and "Percolatin", and many others. He also worked with non R&B artists, the likes of Keith Richards, John Mayer, and Rod Stewart, just to name a few.
Not only was Willie known for his great musical accomplishments, but anyone who has ever spoken about Willie, never fails to mention how Willie was a man of great humility, integrity, compassion and caring.
Willie's musical accomplishments are well documented, and although Willie is no longer with us, his music will be with us forever.
On this week's tribute to Willie Mitchell, we will feature music and artists he was involved with, and comments from people that knew and loved him.

MISSISSIPPI SHEIKS TRIBUTE CD TO BE FEATURED IN A ONE-HOUR RADIO SPECIAL NOVEMBER 13 & 14 ON ALLMEMPHISMUSIC.COM
All Memphis Music is proud to announce this weeks Specialty Show as a tribute to the new 'Mississippi Sheiks' CD "Things About Comin' My Way", hosted by the CD's producer, Steve Dawson.
As a 24/7 global internet radio station www.AllMemphisMusic.com will air a one-hour special on the new Mississippi Sheiks tribute CD, Things About Comin’ My Way, this Friday, November 13 at 10:00 PM Central Time (Memphis Time) and repeating the following morning, Saturday November 14 at 10:00 AM Central Time (Memphis Time).
In addition to playing all 17 tracks of Things About Comin’ My Way, which showcases such artists as John Hammond, The North Mississippi Allstars, Bruce Cockburn, Geoff Muldaur, Bill Frisell, Madeleine Peyroux, Danny Barnes and The Carolina Chocolate Drops, the special includes an in-depth interview with Steve Dawson, who conceived the project, produced most of the tracks on the album, played various instruments throughout, and is also the featured artist on one track. To hear the special, just click on this link at 10PM Central Time on November 13 or 10AM Central Time November 14:
All Memphis Music
Things About Comin’ My Way has been drawing rave reviews from the press since its release on October 20, as well as significant airplay at both blues and Americana radio stations (it’s #22 on this week’s Americana Radio chart).
“As tribute compilations go, Things About Comin' My Way surpasses any musical expectations, the collaborating artists taking half-forgotten songs from long ago and breathing new life and vitality into them. The result is a loving tribute to one of the influential, albeit too often overlooked, treasures in American roots music, the Mississippi Sheiks. Kudos to producer Steve Dawson and the participating artists for a job well done and, of course, to the Mississippi Sheiks for the great music they left us.” – About.com
“This tribute album, the brainchild of musician/producer Steve Dawson, reinterprets the Sheiks’ music across a broad range of styles. And it does so in ways that make the album much more than just another sound-alike, in part because all 17 tracks were recoded across three sessions – to create a sense of consistency while still allowing the featured artists to be spontaneous… With a roster of artists who are clearly enjoying themselves, Things About Comin’ My Way offers a gold mine of music and memories.” - Blues Revue
“… a marvelous celebration of some of America’s formative musical material, key threads in the tapestry of 20th-century song…. If it’s hard to pick highlights among the disc’s seventeen tracks, it’s equally difficult to pinpoint any weak spots; there simply aren’t any less-than stellar performances here…. Great Stuff!” – Blog Critics
“This CD is a fantastic tribute to the great string band The Mississippi Sheiks….
If you love the beautiful music of the bygone era of string band, then this recording will surely please you. Remember that the songs herein are just a fraction of the recordings by the Sheiks, but are a grand reminder of how story & song can be so easily forgotten.
– Blues Source
“Producer Steve Dawson has done that music of the early 1930s very proud, being smart enough to first find the artists who could bring real feeling to songs like “It’s Backfirin’ Now” and “Sitting on Top of the World,” and then have them pull of such exciting new renditions. Just about every track here passes the taste test admirably, and even better, we hear things we’ve never heard before… Some, like the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Ndidi Onukwulu, Kelly Joe Phelps, Madeleine Peyroux and Jim Byrnes, are absolutely sublime in how they turn a sound from the distant past into something that can touch us so deeply today. It’s like a wonder of time, and one of music’s great gifts, how decades can be erased so quickly. But try listening to a song like “He Calls That Religion” or “The World Is Going Wrong” and not feel caught up in the original spirit, flying through the years and sensing what the Mississippi Sheiks created so long ago. It’s like it’s being reborn right before us now, a world apart but in the big picture of life right next door. Close your eyes and open your ears.” – Sonic Boomers
“This well deserved, superb tribute to the Sheiks captures all the band’s qualities, especially that infectious, buoyant energy, in 17 fine performances. In most cases the assembled artists use more instruments than Messrs. Vinson and Chatmon had at their disposal—or instruments they never employed--but nothing’s ever sonically out of whack with the Sheiks’ spirit…You don’t have to listen hard at the end to hear one of the singers break into a warm, knowing laugh, and that bit of extemporaneous commentary says it all about the humanity informing the Mississippi Sheiks’ art and powering the passions of the artists Dawson assembled to pay overdue homage to some men who made a glorious sound that was both smart and soulful.” – The Bluegrass Special

This weekend on the All Memphis Music Specialty Show, we'll feature the new CD from Star & Micey, on the Ardent Music label . The band went in to Ardent Records with us and gave background details about the new CD. We think you're gonna like this new CD and we're going to play it in it's entirety.
It was a dark night, like many before it in Memphis, Tennessee. Joshua Andrew Cosby walked home from rehearsal with his guitar, case-less, slung over his back. A local homeless man flagged him down, not for money but for a story.
He explained to Cosby how he had written a song about his ex-wife Micey. There, on that dimly lit street occurred an exchange, two men playing each other songs of heartbreak and the ultimate sacrifice. Upon parting ways, this man revealed his name to be Star. That name became the fixture for one of Memphis’ most inventive bands: Star & Micey.
Its core members are listed as two brothers without the same last name, Geoff Smith and Joshua Cosby. It was merely coincidence that Cosby later met Nick Redmond at a local pub and began a relationship based on music and above all, brotherhood.
Star & Micey’s self titled debut album features a revolving door of fantastic musicians including Luther Dickinson (The Black Crowes, North Mississippi Allstars), Jody Stephens (Big Star) and Rick Steff (Cat Power, Lucero), just to name a few. However, when the sun sets, it is Cosby, Smith, and Redmond that work relentlessly night after night while remaining poor. Hopefully, the music they make can transcend material possessions, and exhibit something that is always tangible between these three troubadours; that thing is love.
Star & Micey is…
JOSHUA COSBY – Guitar, Lead Vocals
GEOFF SMITH – Bass, Vocals
NICK REDMOND – Lead GuitarThe Specialty Show will air this Friday night October 30th at 10:00 pm (CST Memphis Time) and will repeat on Saturday morning October 31 at 10:00 am (CST Memphis Time.)

All Memphis Music Is Proud To Feature Our Monthly CD Pick, "THINGS ABOUT COMIN' MY WAY", a Tribute to the MISSISSIPPI SHEIKS.
The CD is a tribute to the music of seminal blues group the Mississippi Sheiks, "Things About Comin’ My Way", featuring all-new recordings from such blues and roots stars as John Hammond, Geoff Muldaur, Bruce Cockburn, Bill Frisell, the North Mississippi Allstars, Madeleine Peyroux, Danny Barnes, Kelly Joe Phelps, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops. The CD also includes a song featuring an elaborate string arrangement by Mississippi native and elusive pop icon Van Dyke Parks.
“I’ve been a huge fan of The Mississippi Sheiks for the last 10 years,” says Black Hen Music president Steve Dawson, who produced most of the tracks on the album, played various instruments throughout and also performs a song on the tribute. “Their unique sound, instrumentation, and the fact that they played with such intensity on their recordings all really jumped out at me. Ultimately, my reason for putting this tribute together was to pay respect to the great body of material they produced in their short lifespan, and show how the songs themselves stand up so well over time. I was never interested in re-creating the music. I was looking for good interpreters who could capture the essence of the songs in a kind of portrait. I wanted to work with people who could celebrate the music and the songs.”
The tracks on 'Things About Comin My Way' were recorded in three big sessions, including one with a house band to back up several of the artists, which gives the album an organic consistency to the sound and feel of the songs. The big session done in Seattle featured a group comprised of jazz legend Wayne Horvitz (John Zorn) on piano, Keith Lowe (Bill Frisell, Fiona Apple) on bass and Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie, Peter Gabriel) on drums.
Between 1930 and 1935, brothers Sam, Lonnie, and Armenter Chatmon, who along with Walter Vinson formed The Mississippi Sheiks, recorded nearly 100 singles that would define this band as one of the most popular string bands of all time. They recorded for three major record companies, toured consistently throughout the south and into the north, including New York City and Chicago, and even performed by invitation for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. “Sitting on Top of the World,” arguably the band’s most famous song, has been recorded by such diverse artists as Ray Charles, The Grateful Dead, Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins, Howlin’ Wolf, Carl Perkins, Doc Watson, Van Morrison, Jack White, and Bob Dylan, among many others. In 2008, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
To support the release of Things About Comin’ My Way, Black Hen Music is organizing a number of special concerts throughout Canada featuring many of the artists on the album, with the hope to perform several in the U.S. as well.

This week we will be featuring music from bands that spanned the whole decade. We’ll be playing music by The Gentry’s, The Guilloteens, Randy & The Radiants, Lawson & Four More, The Rapscallions, Tommy Burk & The Counts, The Castels, The Escapades, Flash and the Board of Directors, Shadden & The King Lears, and The LeSabres.
And to top it all off - our guest this weekend is Ron Hall. Ron will be telling the story of all the bands featured on the show. Ron is a Memphis music historian and author of PLAYING FOR A PIECE OF THE DOOR: A History of Garage and Frat Bands in Memphis…1960-1975 and The Memphis Garage Rock Yearbook which are both currently available. Coming soon is his latest book...SPUTNIK, MASKED MEN, AND MIDGETS...The Early Days of Memphis Wrestling...which contains a 4 song cd with songs by Sputnk Monroe, Jackie Fargo, Len Rossi, and Handsome Jimmy Valiant.
This weekend………IT’S BACK TO THE 60’S.

This weekend marks the 32nd anniversary of the tragic death of Elvis Presley. All Memphis Music will celebrate his life with two specials. The first is a new CD called "FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS: LEGACY EDITION , WHICH CELEBRATES THE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICAN STUDIOS SESSIONS, 36 TRACKS ACROSS 2 CDs, INCLUDING 10 ORIGINAL MONO SINGLE MASTERS.
In January-February 1969, after 13 years of recording studio albums and movie soundtracks in Nashville and Hollywood, the time was right for Elvis Presley (1935-1977) to set foot once again in a Memphis studio. Those sessions at Chip Moman’s American Studios yielded a year-long string of ‘comeback’ hit singles: “In the Ghetto,” “Suspicious Minds,” “Don’t Cry Daddy” and “Kentucky Rain.” FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS: LEGACY EDITION collects that entire American Studios output, and then some.

The second weekend of July is upon us and once again it's time for the
All Memphis Music Specialty Show. This week is the new CD from Todd Snider, called "The Excitement Plan". Todd is an
All Memphis Music favorite as the requests for Todd's songs (especially "Beer Run" and "Alright Guy") continually flood in.
Todd's new CD is another great assortment of songs that champion the overlooked and under appreciated for more than 15 years. The CD was produced by the legendary Don Was, (he produced Bob Dylan,The Rolling Stones, Bob Seeger, BB King and many more) and Todd describes the making of the CD as one of his all-time favorite accomplishments.
We'll play the CD almost in it's entirety and we know you're gonna love it.
Todd came to Memphis in the early 90's in search of Memphis singer/songwriter Keith Sykes. Keith is another favorite and much played artist on www.AllMemphisMusic.com . Todd found Keith............Keith introduced Todd to Jimmy Buffet and soon, Todd's first album was released on Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville label in the fall of 1994.. It was called "Songs For The Daily Planet"(a Memphis club where Todd perfected the songs that appeared on the album). It was, and still is, a brilliant collection of songs from start to finish.....and had 2 Top 5 Requested tracks, simultaneously at Rock and AAA radio....."Alright Guy" and the "hidden track ", "Talkin' Seattle Grunge Rock Blues"
It was from Memphis that Todd burst on to the national scene and although Todd no longer lives in Memphis............the bond between Todd and Memphis is as strong as ever.
