MEMPHIS MUSIC INNER VIEW

Mitch McCracken’s love for music started like most people, as a teenager. Some of his closest friends in high school played in garage bands. Mitch had no musical talent so the next best thing was to set his goal as becoming a DJ. He achieved that goal of becoming a DJ right out of high school in his hometown of Memphis. He has been a DJ all his adult life.

He has been a Program Director, Music Director, Promotions Director and Research Director in addition to his "On Air" work at radio stations in New Orleans, Florence, Las Vegas and El Paso in addition to Memphis.

In that first job at FM100 he started to meet some of the most influential people in Memphis music. The first being Chips Moman at American Sound Studios (Elvis, The Box Tops, Dusty Springfield, Merrilee Rush, etc) Chips allowed Mitch to watch some sessions when Billy Burnette was recording his first album there. He met and became friends with Tommy Cogbill, Reggie Young and Bobby Wood who would later be known as part of the Memphis Boys. 

 By the time Mitch reached the age of 23 he was working at WQLT in Florence, AL for Sam Phillips of Sun Records fame. He then returned home to Memphis and bought a national trade magazine called the Bob Hamilton and Friends Radio Report and changed the name to Radio Magazine.

So Mitch McCracken has been involved in Memphis music all his life. He is now promotion the music he loves on his new radio show on All Memphis Music.com. The show is called Memphis Music Inner View and can be heard Tuesday’s at 10pm Memphis time and Thursday’s at 10am Memphis time.

This week’s guest is Jack Rowell Jr. who was been a part of the Memphis music scene since the seventies. He toured and recorded with Ace Cannon, he was a member of the Gentrys, played on Beale Street with Joyce Cobb’s band and The Jack Rowell Blues Band is the reigning Beale Street Blues Kings.

Today Sept 28, 1968 was a very sad day in Memphis history, Memphis radio DJ Dewey Phillips died of heart failure aged 42. He was one of rock 'n' roll's pioneering disk jockeys. In July 1954, he was the first DJ to play the young Elvis Presley's debut record, 'That's All Right/Blue Moon Of Kentucky. He was the reason I wanted to be a dj. It is truly a sad day. WAY too young! Here's to Dewey!!!!

Today , 1958, in AllMemphisMusic.com history- Elvis Presley's mother Gladys died. At her funeral two days later Presley was so overcome with grief he was unable to stand and had to be supported. Over 500 police were at the service to keep the gigantic crowd at bay.

Legendary Stax Guitarist "Bobby Manuel"

This week 'The Voice of Memphis' interviews Bobby Manuel, a legend in the Memphis Music scene.


Bobby Manuel joined Stax Records in the late 1960s and stayed through the label’s bitter end in 1975, after which he and Stax founder Jim Stewart opened Daily Planet studio and began doing independent productions together. At Stax, Manuel was a jack-of-all-trades, working as an engineer, mixer, songwriter, producer, and tour bandleader. But first and foremost, Bobby was and is a guitarist. 


He has recorded with Elvis Presley, Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Albert King, Little Milton, Billy Eckstine, Rufus Thomas, The MGs, Luther Ingram, The Bar-Kays, Leon Russell, John Mayall, Anne Peebles, Mavis Staples, and Eddie Floyd. 


After the demise of Stax Records, Manuel and Stax founder Jim Stewart operated a studio and production company. Shirley Brown was among their most notable signings. He later ran his own label, HighStacks (named to recall the glory of former Memphis R&B labels, Hi Records and Stax).

In 2004, Manuel organized and led a group of Memphis All-Stars with guest appearances by Marvell Thomas and Steve Cropper to celebrate the opening of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, backing legends such as Isaac Hayes, Mavis Staples, Eddie Floyd,William Bell, Solomon Burke, and Al Green who performed in honor of the label.

Bobby Whitlock represents the true southern blues/soul singer. he was the first white artist to be signed to the Stax hip label at the tender age of 16.  In the eyes of Stax, Bobby was destined to be a star. Taken under the wings of Steve Cropper and Donald (Duck)Dunn, Bobby was heading in the right direction from an early age..
Always running on his intuition, Bobby agreed to go to California to become a "friend" in the group Delaney & Bonnie.

Bobby became friends with Eric Clapton during the short 3 month tour in England in 1969.

Back in the states , not satisfied with his position Bobby once again followed his intuition  called Eric Clapton who invited him to his home at Hurtwood  and there they began to write becoming a formidable writing team with songs like "Tell the Truth", "Keep on Growing", " I looked away",  "Why does love got to be so sad",  "Anyday", "Roll it over" and more.
Derek & the Dominos  began to form after some months at  former Beatles George Harrison's  "All things must pass", sessions.
by that time Bobby and Eric had written a handful of songs and George agreed that Phil Spector would produce a couple of them in exchange for playing on his record.

Eric Clapton , Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle  and Jim Gordon were the core band for George,  the yet un-named band Derek & the Dominos were born .

The rest is of course history.
Layla and other assorted love songs is now celebrating its 40th year and is considered to be one of the most influential and great records in the history of rock

In  2000 Derek & the Dominos were awarded a grammy for Layla and other assorted love songs. The musicians the music and their legacy continues .

This weekend All Memphis Music is pleased to present a specialty show highlighting , Jared Booty and his new CD.

Jared Booty, multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and
producer, plays guitar, bass guitar, saxophone, flute and
drums. He taught himself to play left-handed on a friends axe
when he was just a kid growing up inMemphis, Tennessee.
This was the best thing that could have happened to musician
Jared Booty. As a small boy he lived around the corner
from Sun Records where Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny
Cash, Carl Perkins, and Roscoe Gordon made their mark. His
grandparents owned a soul food cafe on world famous Beale
Street where Jared remembers hearing the music of Howlin’
Wolf and B.B. King booming from the cafe jukebox and late in
the evening at home, rockin’ with the soulful sounds of disc jockey
Dewey Phillips as he conducted his “rockin’ soul” radio
show Red Hot & Blue.

From the early strains of Furry Lewis to
the later grooves of Bobby ”Blue” Bland, music seemed to be at
every turn in his young life.
Later Jared’s experience as a sideman with the likes of
rhythm and blues legend Rufus Thomas, soul man Al Green,
rockers Dacy’s Midnight Runners, Bob Dylan, Terrence Trent
Darby, The Fugees and others just added fuel to the fire. Now
that his CD, “Blue and Red Hot” is soon to be released it’s clear
that the musical scope of Jared Booty will reach far and wide.

The special will feature an in-depth discussion with Jared and All Memphis Music co-founder, David Fleischman.

The Specialty Show will air this Friday night October 22th at 10:00 pm (CST Memphis Time) and will repeat on Saturday morning October 23rd at 10:00 am (CST Memphis Time) Tell a friend!

Hal Lansky Saves Legendary Musical Neon!

Poplar Tunes Sign Joins Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum

Exhibition Tomorrow Morning

Memphis, TN … Tomorrow morning, Wednesday, April 7 at 9:00 a.m., representatives from H.A. Balton Sign Company will arrive at the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum with the legendary 12’ Poplar Tunes Record Store neon sign in tow, ready to install it on display inside the museum’s “Sun Records & Youth Culture” gallery. This legendary Memphis landmark, recognizable by just about everybody who calls Memphis home, will be loaded into the museum through the museum’s back doors, just behind the infamous fire station at Third and Linden.

The Poplar Tunes sign (or “Pop Tunes” as it was more commonly referenced) was salvaged from certain disappearance by Memphis businessman and music supporter, Hal Lansky, who offered it on loan to the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum to protect and preserve this critical aspect of Memphis music history. The Lansky’s family clothier business, originally located on Beale Street, dressed many of Memphis’ musical legends, including Elvis Presley. The Lansky’s have always been huge supporters of Memphis music, and have also preserved other artifacts from Memphis’ music history, several of which are already on loan to Rock ‘n’ Soul. H.A. Company restored the sign, including the legendary “Poplar Tunes” and musical note neon across the top of the sign. Within the museum, changing letters across the bottom of the sign will commemorate significant dates in Memphis music history. The Smithsonian Institution was pleased with the sign’s inclusion within the Smithsonian-developed exhibition, and its significance in telling the Memphis music story.

Poplar Tunes, originally located at 308 Poplar, was within walking distance of Lauderdale Court apartments where Elvis lived while working at Crowne Electric. Elvis and many other Memphis musicians frequented Pop Tunes to listen to the latest 45-record releases of this new evolving music revolution which became known as Rock ‘n’ Roll. Pop Tunes also served as the launching pad of legendary Memphis record label, Hi Records, started in 1957 by Pop Tunes’ owner Joe Cuoghi and several partners. Pop Tunes also served as the largest product provider and servicer for the jukebox industry throughout the southeast U.S., making their music distribution business sort of the early forerunner to iTunes… providing teenagers with push-button selections of the latest musical hits, right at their finger tips.



“Every single Memphian who has ever been downtown remembers this iconic sign,” says John Doyle, Rock ‘n’ Soul Executive Director. “Behind Graceland and Sun Studios, Poplar Tunes former 308 Poplar address is one of the most musically significant addresses in our city. World-changing music exploded from that building; it once even promoted its own ‘Hot Releases’ record charts and you can believe the world paid attention.”

The Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Originally developed in association with the Smithsonian Institution, it offers tourists and citizens the only complete exhibition of Memphis music history. It is located on the campus of FedExForum at music Highway 61 (“The Blues Highway” or, to Memphians, Third Street) and legendary Beale Street. This weekend, AllMemphisMusic.com will feature a tribute to Willie Mitchell. On January 5th, the Memphis Music Community, the world music community, and music lovers everywhere lost a true icon with the passing of Willie Mitchell.

Willie was the consumate music man and consumate music business man. Willie was not only a great musician, he was also a writer, arranger, producer, engineer, studio head, and label head.

Best known for signing Al Green to Hi Records, Willie was also responsible for great music from Ann Peeples, OV Wright, Donald Bryant, Syl Johnson, Hi Rhythm, and his own hit instrumentals such as "20-75", and "Percolatin", and many others. He also worked with non R&B artists, the likes of Keith Richards, John Mayer, and Rod Stewart, just to name a few.

Not only was Willie known for his great musical accomplishments, but anyone who has ever spoken about Willie, never fails to mention how Willie was a man of great humility, integrity, compassion and caring.

Willie's musical accomplishments are well documented, and although Willie is no longer with us, his music will be with us forever.

On this week's tribute to Willie Mitchell, we will feature music and artists he was involved with, and comments from people that knew and loved him.

This weekend marks the 32nd anniversary of the tragic death of Elvis Presley. All Memphis Music will celebrate his life with two specials. The first is a new CD called "FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS: LEGACY EDITION , WHICH CELEBRATES THE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICAN STUDIOS SESSIONS, 36 TRACKS ACROSS 2 CDs, INCLUDING 10 ORIGINAL MONO SINGLE MASTERS.

In January-February 1969, after 13 years of recording studio albums and movie soundtracks in Nashville and Hollywood, the time was right for Elvis Presley (1935-1977) to set foot once again in a Memphis studio. Those sessions at Chip Moman’s American Studios yielded a year-long string of ‘comeback’ hit singles: “In the Ghetto,” “Suspicious Minds,” “Don’t Cry Daddy” and “Kentucky Rain.” FROM ELVIS IN MEMPHIS: LEGACY EDITION collects that entire American Studios output, and then some.

This All Memphis Music Specialty Show will air this Friday night, August 14th at 10:00PM (CST Memphis Time) and rebroadcast on Saturday morning August 15th at 10:00AM (CST Memphis Time). A Tribute to Memphis Born ~ Koko Taylor ~ All Memphis Music Specialty Show ~ Internet Radio ~ The Queen of the Blues

Cora Walton was born in 1928, just outside of Memphis, in Bartlett, Tenessee. An early love of chocolate earned her the nickname Koko. Koko also developed a love for the gospel music she heard in church, and also from the blues she heard on Memphis radio. Although she was encouraged to sing only gospel, Koko had an overwhelming love for the blues.

When Koko was in her early 20's, she moved to Chicago. Koko found work there by cleaning homes for wealthy families, but at night and on weekend's, Koko and her husband Robert "Pops" Taylor would visit the Chicago blues clubs. She would hear the likes of Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and many more. It wasn't long before Koko was sitting in with many of these legendary artists. It was during this period the great songwriter/arranger Willie Dixon signed and recorded Koko for USA Records and then signed her to Chess Records. In 1966, Koko released her hit, "Wang Dang Doodle"....establishing Koko as the # 1 female blues singer.

For the last 43 years, Koko had consistently performed live, released albums, received numerous blues awards, garnered 6 GRAMMY nominations and one GRAMMY win, appeared on various tribute albums, appeared in movies, television, and radio all over the world.

Koko Taylor died on June 3rd, 2009, after just receiving an award from the Blues Music Awards for Traditional Blues Female Artist of the year, held in Memphis, Tennessee.

This week on the All Memphis Music.com Specialty show, we pay tribute to the life and music of Koko Taylor, the "Queen of the Blues".
